Tried that (with some timeout -- like 200 to 500 ms, don't
remember).  Found annoying.

Being able to type into a piece of a window somewhere down under
a bunch of others *without* the need to expose it fully (thus
shadowing those others) proved a huge benefit to somewhat manic
multi-tasking user like me before going 21".  On a notebook,
it still helps (both with windows being xterms with source/dest
text/input/output/debug/manpage/whatever, and with GIMP too).

So yes, bringing windows to front that way is ugly to me too.
