Seems you've missed on recent Apple's concerns regarding this
very matter.

Actually I'm rather sure that the first impression with "Apple
chose BSD kernel" was quite correct: Apple is still sick with the
very same (erm) disease, "we'll do the hardware ourselves and 
software too".

The precedent with KHTML was a couple of years forward then,
and this one is somehow better to Apple's survival in my eyes.

It's about learning how to take and how to give, basically.
Not very required item with both their usual approach and BSD
license, quite so -- with cooperative one and "viral" ones.
