My used Toshiba Laptop that came "with Windows XP Professional 
preinstalled" lacked drivers for the ethernet, the modem, the screen, 
the touchpad and the Toshiba extensions.

To get the missing bits, I needed to borrow an Xircon card.

OTOH Linux supported all but the internal modem, out of the box.
