I've found this sort of setup to work well. On my laptop, I set my SMTP
server to be 'mail'. On all the networks I've been on, DHCP will set a
suffix-search that will point 'mail' to an appropriate SMTP server.

Setting

    relayhost = mail

in postfix/main.cf seems to work fine.

I guess it should ideally look for 'mail', 'smtp' and any other common
variants. I guess that still poses the question of what to do if that
fails, since it won't work everywhere. It's a reasonably sensible
default though.

James.
