I should mention that I have a couple of systems where ATA disk 
performance with 2.6 is significantly worse than with 2.4.

I have filed a Debian bug wrt my new Gigabyte mobo (SIS 748); I think I 
mentioned another in supplementary notes.

This system gets 50 Mbytes/sec on 2.4:
kowari:~# hdparm -t /dev/hda{,,}

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads:  110 MB in  3.01 seconds =  36.59 MB/sec

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads:  112 MB in  3.05 seconds =  36.78 MB/sec

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads:  112 MB in  3.03 seconds =  36.91 MB/sec
