On an IBM X40 with ubuntu12:

  - first test
    - no questions asked
    - the first time I did this, when I logged in I saw a dialog saying
that the X keyboard was different, and asking me if I wanted to use the
X one or the Gnome one. I chose Gnome, it seems to work fine.
    - looking at the XF86Configs it seems that the following things changed:
       - I now have a PC105 keyboard (was pc104)
       - I now have the defoma font dirs
/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/(TrueType|CID)
       - I no longer have the smaller Modes 800x600 and 640x480 (good,
never used them)

 - second test
     - works
     - changes as above
     - on one question, the default resolution, it didn't automatically
position itself on 1024x768

 - third test
      - no time tonight!
