No questions. X didn't start because I did not have a mouse plugged in (and
thus, udev did not create /dev/input/mice). Would it be possible to allow X
to start without /dev/input/mice?
(**) Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/input/mice
No such file or directory.
(EE) Configured Mouse: cannot open input device
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "Configured Mouse"
(II) UnloadModule: "mouse"
(WW) No core pointer registered
No core pointer
With a mouse plugged in, X and GDM start correctly at 1024x768.

It does ask buttloads of questions, but I guess that's the point. :-)

Okay, it asks for the driver, with the default selection being vesa. I
change it to i740. It asks me to choose the available resolutions, with
1024x768 and down available. It doesn't ask any more questions.
X and GDM start correctly at 1024x768.

The only substantial changes are the HorizSync and Modes lines (showing only
1024x768, not 1152x864 and down).
I've attached a tarball of the config and logs with and without the hardware
detection tools installed.
Thanks, this is looking rad!
