Thanks everyone for the discussion around this implementation. Based
on the feedback in this thread I implemented classic mode now as a
unpack to a writable location. A very first (v0) sneak preview has
landed in git and will be on the rolling image. There are some UI
details that needs sorting and the work on the delta mechanism needs
to be implemented.

But for the curious (and adventurous) it can be tested with:
 $ sudo snappy enable-classic
 $ sudo snappy shell classic
 $ sudo snappy destroy-classic
