Boot password

I tried the BBB snap software yesterday and was greeted by a three item
selection menu.
Any of the selected items asked for a password and "ubuntu" was not it
and so that stopped the show.
What am I missing?
If this is in the documentation somewhere please just point me to it.

I have the BBB, Rasberry Pi, and Banana Pi plus several other Arm
development boards.
In addition to this I'm open to buying more and have lab facilities.
I'm fairly fluent in Python and C++.
