Just tried snapcraft on one example:
https://github.com/ubuntu-core/snapcraft/blob/master/examples/tomcat-maven-webapp/snapcraft.yaml

and got:
snapcraft/examples/java-hello-world$ snapcraft
Issues while validating snapcraft.yaml: 'vendor' is a required property

Are examples outdated or am I doing something wrong?

Thank you.
