Proposal for snappy application store at ubuntu.com

Hello

Several time ago I needed gdbserver on snappy to do remote development
with eclipse. Thus I asked on this distribution list and snappy image
developers added it by default to the next snappy image. By this way I
would like to *thank very much* all involved people.

At same time, I was told that there were a "click package creation tool"
(Michael Terry's deb2snap). Today, I saw that there is a new tool
"snapcraft" so that every one can create click packages. These tools
could be used to create our packages for needed applications.

But I also see that there is big requirement from community to install
many existing ("standard") applications (e.g: python, git server, java,
...) on snappy as we are used to do on desktop ubuntu.

So I ask whether it wouldn't be the best way if ubuntu.com provides an
app store for snappy with all imaginable applications (everything one
would install on desktop with apt-get).

These applications would be *created/updated **automatically* by
ubuntu.com in the same way as apt packages are provided/created for
desktop ubuntu.

I imagine that this app store could be reused / merged with ubuntu
touch/desktop store as soon as ubuntu touch/desktop adopts snappy
installation technology. So even GUI applications (libreoffice, firefox,
thunderbird) could be added.

The *added value for users* would be that we have referenced (and
guaranteed packages of) applications and installation on snappy would be
as easy as well known "apt-get install".

Off course we would continue to use snapcraft for our own developed code.

Please comment...
