Even though it feels that way sometimes, Debian isn't a magic place
where updates just find their way into automatically. :)  You'd still
have to either find a willing maintainer or maintain it yourself. If a
willing maintainer existed, I'd say there's a fair chance he or she
would pick up the package from Ubuntu and get it in to Debian anyway.
If you have to maintain it yourself, the only difference is that Debian
benefits from the package as well, and Ubuntu has to wait a bit longer
for the package to land in the archive (seeing as we have to wait for it
to be synced). Getting new stuff into Debian is a noble goal. No doubt
about that. I don't, however, think it does a lot to ease the
maintenancen burden on the MOTU team.
