application in the future.

    Personally, rather than setting a timeframe, I'd recommend working
with the processes, and applying for core-dev only at the point where
your sponsors tell you they don't see the point of reviewing your work
anymore.  This may be soon, and may be later, but it's considerably
easier to join a team once you are already considered a member by
other members, and the application processing becomes just paperwork.
