Beyond that, it's possible for anyone to "go straight to
core-dev". While MOTU is a common method to demonstrate packaging
knowledge for those applying for core-dev, especially for those not
involved in Debian, it is different and complementary to core-dev,
rather than being a prerequisite: those applicants from MOTU to
core-dev should be considered to be applying for additional
responsibility, rather than "graduating".
Separately, all potential developers are strongly encouraged to
build a body of sponsored work on the packages for which they intend
to be involved prior to application, regardless if that application is
for MOTU or for core-dev. This serves to both build support for their
application within the Ubuntu community, and demonstrate their
practical knowledge of workflows and processes in Ubuntu.
