When you commission, you can opt to leave the machine running and SSH
enabled.  Then you can SSH to the node and view the cloud-init logs in
/var/log.

You can also see some of what's going on by watching the logs in
/var/log/maas on the MAAS server during commissioning, though once
things have failed, connecting to the node by SSH and reviewing the
cloud-init logs are a better option, IMO.
