Yeah, I'm slowing coming to a similar conclusion.

I'm not sure we need to keep the auto-generated names.

Or, I wonder if we can have two PTR records for the same IP address,
one pointing to the auto name, the other to the custom name? And if
that'll satisfy PostgreSQL and OpenSSH?

Or, if it's better to keep it simple: just have A records from custom
names to IP addresses, and PTR records from IP addresses to custom
names, and ignore all currently unused IP addresses?
