I remember to face a very similar problem...
Today i had a struggle to connect to a openWRT router over tty
Specifically a USB tty dongle..

I installed Minicom, Cutecom, Putty and screen,

I only manage to connect with minicom and screen.

Cutecom and Putty all refuse to connect
I have the feeling that there is a permission issue.

sudo screen /dev/ttyUSB3 115200
works fine. Now i wonder if the GUI based applicatoins are not getting the correct permissions on launch.

When trying Cutecom it displays
Could not open /dev/ttyUSB3

Putty exits with: PuTTY Fatal error.

All configured with the correct baudrates etc.

Also Minicom doesn't appear to behave as expected. I don't use these applications all that often so it may very well be a user error.
