I was not able to fix the problem. Someone (Nio?) had an idea
that works on later Intel graphics card, but it did not work on
this one.

I am able to use the machine for testing MIDI music (its main
purpose), so I still use 14.04 on it.

I am fairly certain I would not be able to view youtube videos on
it, but I don't need to. Also, photos look better on it (desktop
wallpaper) than the gradual color-gradients (such as in the
default Lubuntu welcome-screen).
OK, thanks for the reply, yes, it's the "jagged" graphics,
while for the most part the text is readable . . . Were you
able to "fix" the graphics issue, or did you revert back to
12.04?

Today, 3 battery applets, two Notepad, and two of something
else. Still no lightdm log in; no suspend--goes to blinking
boot cursor . . . have to shut down to get back from
suspend. And, the "add'l drivers" app opens a "Software
& Updates" window frame only . . . it's transparent . .
. nothing visible inside . . . . Fan blowing a lot just
with web browser and Mail open, and Notepad . . . .

Typing this out, today text is again black . . . .
The machine I had the 'jagged' (tearing) graphics on had
an old Intel graphics card, and it mostly works with
Lubuntu 14.04, but is barely fast enough for UbuntuStudio
(XFCE) 14.04.
