You wont have 'Visual Effects" as you don't have any sort of
compositor installed by default (like compton or xcompmgr, or the
super heavy compiz)<br>

I have used both utilities on an iBook with no problem. You may try
setting your boot parameter to include the 60hz refresh.<br>
