That is truly strange. I just created a totally ridiculous 1111x777 mode
and it worked fine without a logout or reboot. Perhaps you're selecting
something the monitor is incapable of? `xrandr --query` will report
maximum resolutions, for example.

You can do this temporarily with `modprobe` but it would probably just
be easier to add something like /etc/modprobe.d/sis.conf with `option
sis_agp OPTION`. Example: `option sis_agp agp_sis_agp_spec=1`. You can
read the manual on modprobe.d for mroe info if you need.

Oddly, it only seems to have two parameters, whereas my i915 has 39. I
also noticed there is some suggestion to [just use the vesa driver][2].
