Let me expand on this a bit. I checked /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and found
that the nvidia driver was failing to load. Checking /var/log/kern.log
shows the errors
nvidia: Unknown symbol mtrr_del (err 0)
nvidia: Unknown symbol mtrr_add (err 0)
The above launchpad bug deals with that issue. I dealt with the problem
by patching and manually rebuilding the nvidia driver, but the above
launchpad bug shows as 'fixed', so it should be out for an upgrade soon.
As others noted in that bug, the video still seems a bit slow - where
Netflix was watchable under 16.04, it's jerky under 16.10. I'll
probably end up reinstalling this machine with 16.04.
