Jack:
On Lubuntu 16.04 (as well as other Ubuntu variants), a file system check
is done when the system is initialized.
"fsck" is the command for doing a file-system check.
I suspect a problem with a file-system used by the system was detected,
and that it was serious enough that it couldn't be simply reported, and
action is required by the user.
Though the output of fsck is not something most people would understand,
it gives information that computer people would understand, giving good
clues of what needs to be done.
It would be useful if you could write down this information, and e-mail
it on this thread of e-mails (hopefully, it doesn't disappear before you
can examine it properly).
Another possibility, is that the graphics mode version of the screen
cannot be successfully initialized, and so it reverts to a text screen.
