[lubuntu-users] 16.04 on Raspberry Pi

Hi folks! Returning to the list after 5y away. :-)

I just updated Lubuntu on my RasPi 3 from 15.10 to 16.04. Mostly it
has gone very smoothly, and glxgears performance has gone from ~20fps
to ~90fps, a very gratifying increase.

When I ran rpi-update on 15.10, I got kernel 4.4. This survived the
update to 16.04.

However, then, when I ran ``apt-get dist-upgrade'', it went back down
again, to kernel 4.1.

I'd like to switch back to the newer kernel, but I can't find instructions how.

The RasPi is an ARM device, without a BIOS or UEFI, and the GPU boots
the system. There's no conventional bootloader and I can't get u-boot
to install correctly, so it's not just a matter of changing GRUB --
there is no GRUB.

Does anyone have any ideas or pointers, please?
