Actually freenode is not against tor but has some caveats and you need to be a registered user. Not sure if this works on the webchat however.

They are more against other open proxies that end up hiding people say doing denial of service attacks agianst freenode. They made a special expemtion for tor even but not sure you can create an account. http://freenode-dev.net/policy.shtml#proxies

This does not seem the kind of policy set by people that want to take your freedom away. I think this is just a first reaction to trying to join freenode and finding out you can't initally connect using tor.
