Given only generalities, all I can say, is that if your wireless is 
getting poor reception (not a clear signal, or low signal strength), 
wireless transmission rates will be significantly slower.

Is there metal between your wireless in your machine, and the wireless 
router?

Does the wireless occasionally disconnect, then re-connect?  That can be 
a sign of poor reception.

I have had to turn desktop (tower) computers around the other way, so 
the back of the computer (where the wireless plugs in) is facing toward 
the wireless router.
