Not sure. Some live media are VM-aware.

Tricky. Might be possible, actually, if you create a Live USB key with
persistent storage, add the graphics drivers and *don't reboot*, just
restart X.org.

I've done this successfully with an Ubuntu Live USB on bare metal but
with an nVidia display that didn't work usably without proprietary
drivers. It was tricky but it did work.

Well, mainly, what does it matter what res it runs at? Install it and
then you'll never see it again, so why is it important?

For me, it boots into the GUI *then* it asks whether you want to
install or try. I am curious what you are doing that is different.
