So if I understand you, you have firefox installed, and are bring the
icon to the desktop from the menu? Or, like Aere suggest, is this an
icon on your desktop from your previous install?

Hi Israel ..Yes its a short cut on the desktop..ie from the programme
menu I right clicked on the programme I wanted to add a short cut to on
the desktop,the short cut appeared on the desktop but wont open when I
right click on it as I am being asked what should open it! if you can

That is rather odd. What shortcuts are you using? Is this a
shortcut on your desktop? If so, simply edit it to execute
*firefox* using the lxshortcut program.
Though, right clicking should produce the menu which asks what you
want to open it with. The left click should open it.
You may need to provide us more specific details about what you are
