How to open some files based on extension rather than mime type?

OK, but in any case LXSession Default Apps only sets a choice for 
"Documents."  Won't that cause LibreOffice to open .abw (AbiWord) 
files?  I'm looking for finer control based on file extensions, unless 
there is a way to do it via mime types.
