Can you report the version of hplip if it is installed with `apt-cache policy hplip` 
Also how was the printer and scanner installed. I find sudo hp-setup -i to work when the GUI doesn't with simple-scan. Also if you have a dvd or usb handy it could be a good idea to test if this effects vivid as well so it does not go out with this bug even if from a live session.
