Disable autostarted applications? is set to No.

I find that in the openbox session, update-notifier is already running.
So openbox does support /etc/xdg/autostart and is not subject to the
LXDE bug concerning that.

But simply running update-notifier is not my problem, and I don't know
how to tell if update-notifier is doing its job in OB. It does not
display a tray icon. It does not trigger update-manager to run. So I'm
not seeing that this tells us much.
