I do the same thing. If the computer can handle docky I use it... if it
is too slow, I use the Lubuntu panel and autohide. It works very well.
I may have to start testing LXQt soon to see if that works.
Did you get a chance to test the open source nouveau drivers? You can
enable/disable the drivers in
software-properties-gtk
in the additional drivers tab.
I know you can get to that through the menus, and gui... I just never
remember how to, and it is faster (for me) to type softTABpTAB in the
terminal than to look around... since I usually have a terminal open anyhow.
