Israel:
There is another way applications (with icons) can be installed (which
my application uses).
Java applications can be installed using Java Web-Start (when using Open
Java, it's called icedtea, and netex).
It seems that the developers of the icedtea package got it right in
almost every case, but my icon did appear a little bit larger than the
others in the Ubuntu Unity lens.
With Linux (currently), the only option Java Web-Start supplies, is to
create a desktop launcher. That desktop launcher has been consistently
sized in every Linux distribution I have tried (a lot of them).
Mine only appears in the menu because of my additional installer code,
which copies the desktop launcher to the appropriate place for the menu.
