It could be a faulty port. Try plugging the USB memory stick into the port
you normally plug in your external 2tb drive. Once you've done that, take a
look in the /media directory. There should be a directory with the same
name as your username. Look in that directory and let me know what you have
found. After that, try the lsusb command to see if the USB device is
recognised.

Also... does your system have a floppy disk drive?
