Chromium Browser Uninstall; Extracting a tar.gz file

1) In order to avoid the rather large updates for Chromium, I would like to
uninstall it (I use Firefox anyway).

I have tried the following two commands, but with no joy.

sudo apt-get purge google-chrome-stable

and

sudo dpkg -r chromium

2) Also: how do I extract a tar.gz file?
