The thing is even if you met offline at a linux users group you could still be seen in a security camera or a camera taking pictures for toll roads. 

Also if anyone can join the list means that you could subscribe and get the email addresses that way. So it doesn't make it that much more convient for spammers sending links or inteligence agencies but makes it less conveint for the users of the list.
