1.   What critical bugs.
There is only this one:

really I think it has a good chance of being fixed before 12.10 RC2.
(since one of the devs can reproduce it easily)
The fault is mine, I'm still upset about every other bug I find in
mplayer (and I keep finding the same unfixed bugs over and over)

2. as for other mplayer wrappers, I got to this page

and just gave up.
3. CPU speed, who cares.  I love how fast mplayer launches.  one
reason i still use it even if it crashes 1 in 5 times.
