[Lubuntu] Capture "wall" messages for display on desktop?

I've just set up apcupsd to manage my small LTSP network powered by aUSB
APC UPS.
It successfully shuts everything down after the designated runtime on
battery. The only problem is that it only posts warning messages to the
wall command, which outputs only to console sessions. On the face of
it, useless to the desktop user who will find the system inexplicably
shutting down while he is in the middle of all his work.
XFCE4-power-manager, the current Lubuntu default power manager, is not a
solution, since it does not know how to monitor this UPS. (I filed the
buga while back, but have not received any news of progress.)
There is also Network UPS Tools (NUT), which I have not tried, but
apcupsd is regarded as the best choice for APC UPS's.
So I'm wondering if apcupsd can be made to work via some tool that
captures wall messages and displays them on the desktop.
