Or simply systems that they're familiar with.  I'm an ancient programmer
(started in the 1970s) and have been using Unix and Unixlike systems
since the 1980s.  I thus tend to work a lot from the command line using
the shell so much modern GUIness passes me by.

My desktop system is a quad-core Intel based system with 8Gb of memory
but I run xfce rather than KDE or Gnome desktops simply because I like
it and I'm comfortable with it.  I'm looking at lubuntu because it seems
like something on the same lines.
