[Lubuntu-qa] Install Problems

I'd be glad to show you the whole story. Chapter one:

https://docs.google.com/View?id=dfkkjjcj_101gnkrpg5v#_Installation_type_15909626294

Scroll down a bit to:

"What's our story on the 'use largest unpartitioned space' option?  I'm
not overly concerned if we drop it, as I don't think it's a common use
case and users can always resort to the advanced partitioner. -Evan
Dandrea 6/3/10 11:16 AM"

That was wrong, but who do you think can convince the installer-team to totally rebuild ubiquity????????????

Hi Lance,
If that is still the case, then it is worth resurrecting. As cc's are going to QA I'm sure some one will will take note, else I can raise it at next meeting.

Phill.

Well, Maverick had a killer bug:

I literally had to fight tooth-n-nail to get that fixed. But the problem began with the elimination of "use continuous free space" on the live installer. It does still exist on the alternate and netboot installs.

I tried to get it restored but the best I could come up with was getting Colin Watson to change how the progression text is displayed:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/766265/comments/28

So, it is possible - if as little as 2 to 4 GB of free space exist - to have the installation just start when clicking on "Install alongside". The only difference is that the progression button changes from "continue" to "install now".

IMHO it's still a bit unclear but I don't get to make design
 decisions.

thanks for answering Lance,
I was minded not to reply, but I guess I should. I have run multiple ubuntu / lubuntu installs on an extended partition of my own Hard Drive since 9.10. Never has one tried to delete everything, it offers the choice of do want me to take over everything, live with other systems or do as you wish on your crazy system. You simply tell it what you want the installer to do.

regards,
Phill.

Since you said, "This is a one-time message", I'm probably wasting my time replying but I honestly would have appreciated more info.

Both Lubuntu and Xubuntu use Ubuntu's installers. The live installer is "ubiquity" and the text/alternate installer is the "debian-installer" with a few minor tweaks.

I'm not a developer but I've been iso-testing Ubuntu for nearly 4 years and a total rebuild of 'ubiquity' just prior to the release of Maverick did present one nasty bug and a few minor challenges, but those should be largely straightened out.

Most importantly there is no real difference between Lubuntu's installer and Xubuntu's installer, just different artwork. The only thing I can think of that might cause someone to think things are going to blow up is this:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/766265

I wish I
had more info to work with,

This is a one-time message to warn other potential lubuntu users.

Yesterday I have tried to install lubuntu-11.10-desktop-i386.iso to my laptop. It has not given me the choice where to install to and tried to overwrite my current system. Luckily I was closely observing the progress and was able to abort in time.

Also it did not find my wifi.

I have now chosen to install xubuntu instead, where I was able to install to the partition of my choice, also it did find my wifi no problem.

On a side note,
it is very disturbing to read personal notes of unknown and non-introduced persons on the primary website. This makes it look very non-professional. I must suspect the project is targeted to a small circle of insiders only.

To my opinion lubuntu has a long way to go.
