Sound like a good plan to me :)
I'll try to get some details and numbers.

Same here and I second your question/request.
Using Synaptic, you can check the size of the package you want to download
and how much space it will use.
I think by using System Monitor Programs we can tell the RAM usage.
As for how much space that will take from the CD? I have no idea.
