No sound on 12.10 installation on Acer Revo - how to get some?

Aaaarrrrggggghhhhhh!!!!!!!!  :-)

I had misread the silly icons by the sockets and had the connection to
the amplifier plugged into the Mic Input!

Sorry all, it works perfectly now!  What a waste of half a day!
