*buntu 12.04 has an audio issue, due to a nonsense kernel backport, of
an experimental jacks kernel piece, which was out of the kernel tree.

If you are using *buntu 12.04, either try installing kernel metapackage:

linux-image-generic-lts-quantal

which is 12.10's kernel,


or install *buntu 12.10.


If you do the second, test with the live-cd first, to see if *buntu
12.10 fixes your issue indeed.
