LXPanel Vol control and ALSA mixer problem

When I right click on the Vol control and select "Volume Control" settings I get 'Error you need to install a (sic) application to configure the sound...'  I thought this problem had been solved but, for the life of me I can't find any bug reports or similar about this, to see if it's something I've done.
Any pointers on this?
