Hi Fritz,
I am not suggesting that there is no issue, just that the problem may not be with the packaging/container format. Problem lies somewhere else which is to be troubleshooted.

I mostly tested on virtual machine but I took clue and installed on real hardware. One generic desktop with LinuxMint 19.3 and one on MacbookAir with Debian Sid. Installed Chromium snap and logged into instagram (with the workaround). I'm able to access my folders and upload.

What I would suggest is you open a topic in lubuntu discourse page and upload an image of the issue or better a screencast. That would be helpful.

Regards,
Don't have time today to mess with a screenshot, it is a known issue in the community . . . it's just trickling down to end users from 19.10 and up???

https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/chromium-open-file-dialog/14453/4
