Looks like I spoke too soon, after running the apt dist-upgrade, where it
showed a 5.8.0-34 option for updating, after it ran thru the process there
was an error reported in the apt data "the header package is missing" . .
. similar to what it said on the previous upgrade to the kernel that I ran
last week??

I rebooted and ran apt again and it showed the "5.4 kernels to remove" via
autoremove . . . I ran that through and rebooted and then ran "apt -f
install" it showed nothing to do . . . .
$ uname -r
5.8.0-33-generic
In the processing of the autoremove it ran a "grub config" and in there it
showed "/boot/vmlinuz-5.8.0-34-generic" and a
"boot/initrd.img-5.8.0-34-generic" . . . but again the system doesn't seem
to be picking that option????
