Walter:

Just to follow up, to test the "nvidia" issue I was going to boot Lu 20.04
and then change the video driver in Add'l Drivers, but for some reason the
computer booted U-MATE 20.04 . . . so I went to Add'l Drivers there and
changed the driver to "nouveau" . . . the progress bar loaded quickly and
pushed across to completion in a minute or two. Logging out it went to
black screen, so I rebooted and GUI was back in play . . . hit
ctrl-alt-Fn-F2 and the TTY was there . . . hit same keys with F7 and we
were back in the GUI . . . .

Then I went to Lu and tried the same thing, there were two choices for
Add'l Drivers apps in the drop down menu, I went for the top choice, and
this time I thought, "I'll try to just drop back on the Nvidia driver from
440 to 435 . . ." I clicked "apply changes" . . . and nothing happened . .
. I tried several times. Then I tried the other, lower Add'l Driver app,
and clicked to change to 435, and this time the progress bar opened, slowly
. . . and then slowly worked its way to about 98% and then just stayed
there . . . for several minutes . . . did something else, came back, still
there . . . ate lunch, came back, still "hanging" there. I closed the app
and rebooted, and on log in I checked AD and instead of 435 prop, it was
now "nouveau" as I had selected over in U-MATE.

I tested the keystrokes for TTY, and TTY log in was working, but no choice
of F7 thru F12 would take me back . . . I guess the only one I didn't try
was F1???
All I get is the blinking cursor on a black screen, it doesn't drop back to
GUI with nouveau . . . whereas same steps in U-MATE get me in and then out
of the TTY . . . jes sayin' . . . .

While I was in the the TTY I ran the upgrades that were available after
making the change in video drivers, and then rebooted, and again tried the
keystroke TTY . . . no changes at this time. I can get into TTY, run
stuff, but then only choice is to reboot to get out of it.
