[lubuntu-devel] Lubuntu 18.10 != Broadcom wifi

I wiped and installed 18.10 on my old compaq netbook because it - again -
plays nice with the suspend function. However, in the course of
rediscovering the joys of getting everything to work, I find that enabling
the Broadcom network device is problematic.

First, I used the default package manager to download and install broadcom
drivers; after rebooting and adding/configuring connections, it fails to
load or become active. I did notice that its info in the package manager
said it was 64-bit, which could explain the outcome on this 32-bit system.
The readme file indicated that some things are blacklisted, with cryptic
instruction to amend & rebuild, etc. but that's outside my comfort zone &
IDK if applicable anyway.

So, after uninstalling those, I followed advice here:
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2214110

IIRC, I then installed
firmware-b43-installer
rebooted, repeated and failed.

This is so much fun! But any good advice you might provide will be most
appreciated.  Thanks.
