Hi,
After the release of Yakkety Alpha2, I'll made a change for our
software-center (LSC) to switch to the Gnome one (GC), also used on
Ubuntu. The goal is to do some testing during the Yakkety release
cycle, to see if it's working correctly on Lubuntu.
There are many reasons for this switch :
- LSC is not maintained anymore since years
- LSC uses an old technology (aptdaemon), also not maintained since years
- GC doesn't have too much Gnome specific depends.
- GC is written in C (we can expect some memory optimization)
- GC uses some modern technology : appstream, snap support ... and we
can count on Ubuntu folks to add more stuff in the future
However, it needs to work on low spec hardware, the ones we target for
Lubuntu. That's the goal of the testing. If it's not fast enough, we
will switch back to LSC.
Any comments / suggestions are welcome, we are still in the middle of
the release cycle for 16.10, so we have a bit of time. Even if we ship
GC in 16.10, but we have negative feedbacks, we can also switch back
for 17.04 (there are not LTS releases).
Regards,
Julien Lavergne
