You wanted to know if it is possible to install lubuntu-desktop into a 
mini system and get Lubuntu Trusty that way.

Yes, it works. I used the menu option (tasksel) in the mini installer.


I downloaded (and renamed) the relevant mini.iso files via

I have tested Xenial (32-bit and 64-bit) and Yakkety (32-bit) too, and 
it works well for me to install Lubuntu via the mini.iso files.

I have also managed to install Lubuntu via Ubuntu Server Xenial iso 
file. This way it is possible to install Lubuntu 64-bit in UEFI mode.
