Hi Ian,
If you want to wrap a safety belt around dd (nicknamed 'disk destroyer'
and 'data destroyer'), you can use mkusb.

The Startup Disk Creator in older systems is buggy, but it is cloning in
the same way as dd and mkusb in Lubuntu 16.04 LTS. So if I understand
your question correctly, you should be able to use the Startup Disk
Creator successfully :-)

Lubuntu 16.04 LTS comes with the Startup Disk Creator alias
usb-creator-gtk version 0.3.2. Check the version with the command line
usb-creator-gtk --version
before using it.
